Job Description: The NEW Associate Director of Residential Life is primarily responsible for the effective management and oversight of student staff recruitment, selection, and training as Colgate continues to develop the faculty-led Residential Commons, living-learning model throughout the first-year and sophomore residential areas. This position serves as a core leader within the Office of Residential Life, providing oversight and support for a variety of processes and initiatives. The Associate Director will interact early and often with students and parents as they interface with the department. This position will provide leadership for educational initiatives sponsored by the department including those facilitated through student staff in the residence halls, and those related to department processes such as off-campus living. Accountabilities will include:- oversight and coordination of student staff recruitment, selection, training;- provide training and ongoing guidance to assistant director staff in their work supervising and managing performance of student staff; - scheduling and oversight for residential life student and professional staff on-call rotations; - effective and accurate communication with a broad range of constituents about residential education;- effective management of conflict mediation and resolution with student and parent concerns;- effective advice to interest house programming board in coordination of programming and allocation of funds;- effective execution of the education related to the off-campus student living experience within parameters set by the University;- oversight of residence hall opening and closing preparation and procedures; and- effective contribution to the new student orientation team;- development and execution of departmental assessment plan, in conjunction with the Department Director;- oversight of website information on residential life;- effective support of department office and processes; - assessment and use of appropriate judgment in cases of emergencies;- as requested, provide guidance and support for professional and student staff with residential life; and- as required, serve in residential life professional staff on-call rotation.As part of this role, the incumbent is responsible for the following:- effective financial management of assigned budgets;- effective development of and contribution to University policy related to assigned areas; and- as required, may be responsible for providing effective advice, counsel, and leadership on University committees. Demonstrated ability to consistently follow crises response protocol and consistently make appropriate decisions to initiate crises intervention responses.Residential Facilities: Demonstrated expertise in building management sufficient to avoid material consequences across multiple facilities. Demonstrated knowledge of occupancy planning and methods.Customer Service: Demonstrated ability to set and manage/monitor the customer service standards for operational support for residential housing. Ability to set and model customer service/problem solving support around timeliness, reliability and accuracy. Ability to identify needs for improvement and implement changes.Operations Management: Expertise in managing financial, technical, facilities, and human resources across assigned areas. Expertise in developing and delivering effective communications about the function with a broad range of campus partners. Knowledge of data and systems sufficient to identify meet operational needs. Demonstrated ability to develop and apply policies, protocols, and workflows to support operational performance of department and functions within University guidelines. Records & Technology Management: Demonstrated expertise of interrelationships between all key residential housing data sets and relevant systems. Demonstrated ability to provide direction to design and use of residential data and information. Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of residential records and protocols. Sufficient knowledge of technical systems and departmental needs to securely administer systems. Qualifications: - A minimum of a Master's degree in Higher Education, or related field or a Master's degree in progress with an anticipated completion date within 6 months of hire is required.- A minimum of three years of related experience is required.- Must be knowledgeable and committed to the integration of educational priorities and learning goals into residential programming with meaningful outcomes. - Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory in the creation and development of programs as well as in advising responsibilities.- Must have demonstrated leadership experience in a higher education setting.- Demonstrated ability to consistently apply culturally appropriate advising, helping and coaching techniques while also recognizing the uniqueness of each individual.- Demonstrated ability to use problem solving and analytical skills in challenging or crisis situations to produce balanced and positive outcomes.- Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills. - Demonstrated ability to create and maintain productive and collegial working relationships with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and visitors. Additional Preferred Qualifications: - Experience developing and/or working within a residential curriculum model is a plus.- Experience collaborating with faculty is preferred.
