The Director of Clinical Experiences is responsible for all aspects of clinical experiences for Undergraduate and Graduate teacher candidates, including approximately 95 student teaching and practicum placements and approximately 100 field experience placements per year. The Director works with public school liaisons to identify and secure clinical placements which meet all state licensure requirements. The Director recruits, trains, supervises and supports University supervisors, especially as they support candidates in completing their edTPA portfolios in student teaching. The Director collects and analyzes data in collaboration with the Data Manager and reports results to faculty to support continuous improvement of all programs. The Director also supports candidates throughout their clinicals to ensure their success.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
Coordinates and/or conducts all aspects of the placement process, for student teaching and practica.
Reviews applications and placements. Assigns college supervisors and provides orientation for both students and supervisors. “Signs off” on grades. Facilitates entering grades.
Counsels the student teacher and mediates issues that may occur. Stays in contact with faculty advisors
Designs, develops, attends and supervises student teaching seminar. Recruits speakers as appropriate for seminars.
Updates all student teaching information and forms related to student teaching in compliance with Department of
Education teacher licensure programs, including Student Teaching Handbook.
Maintains relationships with District Facilitators. Stays informed of changes in district policies to make sure candidates are welcome in schools.
Recruits, interviews, hires and provides continual training for University supervisors in all aspects of the student teaching experience with a focus on facilitating preparation and submission of edTPA portfolios.
Facilitates semi-annual meetings between college supervisors and faculty
Works with faculty to develop and coordinate field experience placements by developing expanded partnership with school districts and designing a system for managing placements.
Develops and coordinates placements for clinical experiences in methods courses.
Minimum five to ten years of experience in teaching and/or administration at either the elementary, middle, secondary or college levels including responsibility for program development, management and evaluation.
Ability to work cooperatively and constructively in developing relationships with others inside and outside of the University.
Ability to set priorities, work independently and as part of a collaborative academic team.
Cultural competency to work with diverse student population.
Solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment. Familiarity with specific applications used by the University a plus.
Ability to visit various sites throughout the state, generally within the greater Hartford area, using personal transportation.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents.
Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner.
Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, diplomacy, negotiation and sales skills, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision.
Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
