MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintain Life Saving and Fire Fighting Equipment/Systems. Help plan and perform all deck department work for the maintenance and upkeep of the training ship. Assist Chief Mate in maintaining accurate shipboard safety and maintenance documentation. Assist in supervision of cadets during ship's operation classes, student assistant workers, watch standing (Training Cruise), mooring and unmooring operations. Maintains crane/cargo/stores/rigging operations. Support Chief Mate and 2nd Mate with the vessel safety management system. Tracks and maintains inventories of deck and hotel consumables. Assists Chief Mate in preparation and completion of all ABS/USCG/MARAD regulatory inspections. Conducts and/or assists with ballast operations (including ballast treatment testing).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The Day Mate will be required to participate in the Academy's annual training cruise of approximately 60 days as a condition of employment. The candidate will be required to work a variety of shifts that may include working days, evenings, weekends and/or holidays. The successful candidate will be subject to the Academy's random drug testing program, be required to complete a background investigation and pre-employment physical, including a drug test prior to beginning work. As required by Federal regulations, the candidate must be able to obtain a Merchant Mariners Document issued by the US Coast Guard, and a TWIC card issued by the Transportation Safety Administration. In addition, each year the candidate must pass a pre-cruise physical and drug screening for participation in the training cruise. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be satisfactorily completed prior to any candidate being offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for this position. The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BS Degree in Marine Transportation or Nautical Industrial Technology. Third Mate of Steam or Motor Vessels of Any Gross Tons Upon Oceans, Radar Observer (Unlimited). STCW – 95 Endorsement TWIC Thorough knowledge and abilities in all areas of vessel maintenance and repair. Specific areas include deck and hotel maintenance and operations, vessel stability system, ballast operations and maintenance, shipboard paint systems and application, anchoring, line handling and all shipboard lifesaving and firefighting systems/equipment and intermediate computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet applications.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Thorough working knowledge of the ISM Code and all other State and Federal compliance requirements. Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite data base, spread sheet and word processing. Preferred: Second Mate of Steam or Motor Vessels of Any Gross Tons Upon Oceans, Radar Observer (Unlimited).
SALARY RANGE: Starting Salary budgeted at up to $75,000 commensurate with education and experience.
