Working under the supervision of the Managing Director of Public Affairs, the Assistant Director of Communications will lead the Office of Public Affairs efforts in visual news-style storytelling by conceptualizing, shooting and editing video, as well as writing content that drives engagement with internal and external audiences. The Assistant Director will identify, develop and tell important University stories, showcase the work of faculty and the achievements of students through video, photography, online written content and animation on the web, social media, and other platforms. He or she coordinates with the public affairs and social media teams to identify and push key content that reinforces the NYU brand. This content includes on-air interviews, writing stories and news briefs, and creating a variety of graphics, videos and photos. The Assistant Director (and the content that he or she produces) will be representing the University, and thus must be able to work within NYU's institutional expectations. The Assistant Director should have technical skills sufficient to be able or to rapidly learn to be able to post pieces in all digital and social media domains and in a content management system.
Required Education: Bachelor's degree
Required Experience: At least 5 years' of related communications experience. On-air broadcast experience is a must with strong writing and internal personal skills.
Preferred Experience: Experience working in public relations or higher education industry.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Excellent on-air presentation, writing and verbal communications skills. Ability to shoot and edit multiple news-style video stories daily – this includes video feature and research stories, Q and A interviews, and text based videos for social media among others. Capacity to shoot photography for a variety of platforms. Write stories and news briefs for multiple publications and channels. Proficiency in end-to-end visual storytelling, including pre-production, production (cinematography, lighting, audio production), editing and video compression for the web. Experience with DSLR video production and workflow. Proficient in Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro. Knowledge of digital photography and CMS. Excellent organization, consultative, and verbal/written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and interact with a diverse population at all levels. Knowledge of a wide range of communications media. Needs to be self-starter, deadline oriented and able to multitask. Must be able to produce multiple pieces of content daily as a quick writer and video editor.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Experience with HTML, CSS, After Effects or Motion.
