Assistant Director for Business Operations (WVUEI 17-0082)
The West Virginia University Research Corporation is seeking applications for an Assistant Director for Business Operations. This position provides critical strategic, operational, program, project and administrative leadership to the WVU Energy Institute (WVUEI) on behalf of the Institute Director to sustain and grow funded energy research at WVU, including the provision of organizational development, strategic and financial planning, program and project management, supervision of personnel, and direct programmatic support to key Major Research Initiatives (MRIs), fundraising efforts, and Faculty Research Support (FRS) services within the colleges.
The position holder shall manage a portfolio of research, administrative and managerial activities and personnel, to ensure smooth and efficient operations of the organization. This includes exercising both project- and program-specific leadership as well as managing WVUEI’s overall operations in the capacity of both a Chief Operating Officer and a Chief Financial Officer. The position holder shall independently exercise professional/managerial/leadership concepts, techniques and judgment to achieve these ends. The position holder shall define, develop and administer organizational policies to solve a wide range of complex problems in creative and practical ways. In addition to operational leadership, the position holder shall also provide internal management consulting to both WVUEI and various “client” research centers working in energy related research.
Responsible to oversee, plan, direct, and coordinate organizational activities including policy formulation, management of daily operations, and resource stewardship consistent with business objectives. Oversees procurement, human resources, communications, finance, general operations and office support. Provides operational leadership; requires creativity, and interpretive abilities to effectively resolve complex problems. Work effort has significant impact on personnel, budget and operations, producing major organizational, legal and financial results and/or liability.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Lead strategic management & planning efforts, including - on behalf of the Director - manage, articulate and facilitate the continual development of the strategic and tactical direction of the Institute.
Develop, implement and manage systems and processes in support of Energy Institute performance measurement & reporting
Support fund raising initiatives, including working closely with the WVU Foundation
Provide general leadership, oversight and coordination of activities within Energy Institute staff, related both to office operations and leadership of specific capture/proposal initiatives and services to the colleges and faculty, along with specific leadership duties related to communications/marketing/outreach, as well as development and implementation of strategically aligned processes, policies and protocols.
Bachelor’s degree in a technical or administrative field
8 years of experience in complex technical project development and management
An equivalent combination of education and experience
