The purpose of this position is to provide expert scientific and fundraising guidance to Deans, Department Chairs, scientific faculty, as well as counsel and thought leadership to the Associate Vice President, Global Public Health Science and Technology to provide opportunities for scientific fundraising from corporations, foundations and private individuals. The Senior Science and Technology Advisor is strategically responsible for identifying areas and ideas of scientific merit and translating them into fundraising opportunities. The incumbent in this position provides highly skilled project management for fundraising initiatives in various scientific domains; serves as a technical expert, consultant and adviser to school fundraisers, as well as corporate and foundations fundraising staff re: the scientific merit of ideas and concepts to be presented to scientific funders. Assists school fundraisers and CFR staff to interpret and fully understand the merit of technical scientific topics – and how to present them to prospects with limited or no scientific background. Develops comprehensive, high level fundraising strategies for highly technical scientific initiatives, such as the Center for Quantum Phenomena, virus metagenomic studies and nanomaterials research; evaluates the funding potential of scientific ideas and concepts proposed by faculty to ensure that the Global Public Health, Science and Technology fundraising team prioritizes science projects with high funding potential. Evaluates scientific initiative to ensure that they are competitive for funding. Also serves to identify and advise the Associate VP re: projects that are not novel, have limited scientific merit or potential impact to avoid allocation of scarce staffing resources to these efforts.
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Education: PhD in one of the following domains: Science or Engineering
Required Experience: Five years of relevant science fundraising experience in a major academic institution; evidence of ability to work successfully in close partnership and collaboration with faculty and to secure the confidence and trust of scientists, engineers, and researchers throughout the New York University. The individual must have extensive science knowledge, fine judgment, customer service orientation, and ability to understand/interpret scientific information to be credible with highly accomplished faculty. Resilience, determination, and dedication and exceptional interpersonal skills are critical qualities for success in this position. A key qualification is the ability to inspire and motivate NYU faculty to cooperate and provide the necessary information for GPHST fundraising efforts.
Preferred Experience: 5-10 years’ experience as a scientist and/or science writer, preferably in an academic setting with a major science enterprise. Demonstrated track record in the preparation of successful highly technical scientific grants and proposals.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Strong scientific and technical writing skills, knowledge of scientific conventions regarding scientific aims and benchmarks, as well as research terminology, and a comfort level with and ability to understand and interpret highly technical information. Ability to discern the merit and scientific value of research projects and proposals. Must be able to present highly technical information and the benefits of scientific research in terms that can be understood by either a lay person with limited understanding of science, or a highly qualified research scientist.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Ability to work with senior University leadership, Deans, faculty and fundraising staff across the University to effectively cultivate relationships among key constituencies. Must have an understanding of intellectual property and licensing. Must be able to work gracefully under pressure of very tight deadlines, be collegial, proactive, and a problem solver.
